Thread: String length field for STRING variables.

Default String length field for STRING variables.

    Hello, colleagues!

I noticed that when I keep string length of STRING variable with it's value by default (5) my project in runtime works fine even I initialize such variable with strings much longer then 5 symbols lenght.

Question is, may I meet some troubles in future if I use string variables with string length value less then real lenght of their content?

In other words, can using string variable with string length = 5 for store long string values like "Copadata Zenon" lead to some runtime troubles (memory leakage or something like this)?

Default AW: String length field for STRING variables.

    hello stolyarov_as,

I assume this depends on the driver of the variable. It might work fine on the intern driver, but you may have severe problems on other drivers.

    best,
    Alex

The definition of a string length is only taken in account if the driver is based on a linear addressing scheme - depends on the addressing scheme of the PLC.

    Such drivers are i.e. S7TCP32, ModbuRTU,MelsecA...etc.

this length also limits the value you can edit in screen element linked with the string. The element can show whole string, but you can only edit 5 chars
